Why The North Won’t Have Full Power Soon

In the past two weeks, northern Nigeria has faced a significant setback in efforts to restore power to millions of residents as terrorist activities continue to disrupt essential services. The blockage of power restoration efforts not only amplifies the humanitarian crisis but also stifles economic growth, amplifying the cycle of poverty and insecurity. Currently, all northern states except Niger and Kwara have been without power for two weeks. The hardest-hit states are, Kaduna, Kano, Jigawa, Gombe, and Katsina, which have experienced complete blackouts.

The blackouts also affect Sokoto, Zamfara, Bauchi, Yobe, Borno, Adamawa, Taraba, Niger, Plateau, Nasarawa, Kogi, and Benue. The power outage across the north started when vandals damaged the Shiroro-Kaduna transmission line earlier in October, which is the main power supply line to the north. The Shiroro-Kaduna transmission line recently suffered damage from vandalism. Two of its towers, specifically towers T133 and T136, were vandalized, causing significant damage to the transmission lines.  This has disrupted the transmission of bulk power to the North West Region of Nigeria, as each line is capable of carrying 600MW of electricity.

The Northern region’s energy infrastructure has been repeatedly targeted, hindering efforts to address the issue. Power restoration has remained an uphill battle. However, there are several other factors that contribute to this problem, and if not addressed, the north may continue to struggle with power outages in the future.

In addition the Power Minister Adebayo Adelabu told senators at the National Assembly that full power would return to the region within 14 days, meaning the 17 affected states will remain without electricity until Tuesday, November 12, 2024. He added that partial power restoration would happen within three days. Millions of residents continue to wait on their Disco for an end to this looming crisis as residents continue to stay in darkness. The various electricity distribution companies and the Transmission Company of Nigeria continues to assure residents of their commitment to restore power soon.
