The Nigerian music industry has experienced a meteoric rise, and at its forefront are two iconic artists, Wizkid and Davido. These superstars have not only taken African music to new heights but have also made remarkable strides in the global music industry. Their careers, filled with collaboration, competition, and growth, have helped shape Afrobeats and have captured the world’s attention.

Early Lives and Musical Beginnings

Wizkid (born Ayodeji Ibrahim Balogun) grew up in Lagos, Nigeria, and was deeply influenced by his father, who was a choirmaster in a Pentecostal church. Wizkid’s musical journey began at just 11 years old in 2001, as he explored his talents in a church group called the Glorious Five, where he collaborated with friends to release a 7-track album. By 2006, he was pursuing music full-time, collaborating with artists like OJB Jezreel, Naeto C, and Banky W. These early connections and experiences set the foundation for his later success.

In 2009, Wizkid signed with Empire Mates Entertainment (E.M.E), which marked a significant turning point. Two years later, in 2011, his debut album, *Superstar*, featuring hits like “Holla at Your Boy” and “Tease Me,” brought him widespread recognition. This album established him as a rising star, earning him critical acclaim and a massive fan base.

Davido, on the other hand, was born David Adedeji Adeleke on November 21, 1992, in Atlanta, Georgia, USA. Raised in a family with a strong musical background—his father, Dr. Deji Adeleke, is a prominent businessman, while his late mother, Veronica Adeleke, was a university lecturer—Davido’s love for music grew from an early age. His exposure to diverse music genres in Atlanta, including hip-hop, R&B, and Afrobeat, further fueled his passion. Watching his father’s vast music collection, which included Nigerian icons like Fela Kuti and King Sunny Ade, inspired him to pursue a career in music.

In 2012, Davido’s breakout hit, “Dami Duro,” quickly became an anthem across Nigeria. His debut album, *Omo Baba Olowo*, released that same year, showcased his talent and cemented his status as a prominent figure in Afrobeats. This period also marked the beginning of a new era in Nigerian music, as both Wizkid and Davido’s unique sound and charisma attracted fans around the world.

Early Friendship and Bonding

In the beginning, Wizkid and Davido shared a friendly, supportive relationship. As young, ambitious artists, they often crossed paths at shows and events, hinting at the potential for collaboration. Social media interactions between them were positive, and they frequently praised each other’s talents. Davido once tweeted his pride in Wizkid’s success, and Wizkid responded with words of encouragement. Fans eagerly awaited a collaboration between these rising stars, and their mutual respect appeared unbreakable.

During this period, they even worked on popular songs like “Dami Duro” and “Pombo,” which highlighted their musical synergy and further solidified their influence in the Nigerian music industry. However, as their careers advanced, their relationship would eventually take on a different tone.

The Rivalry Begins: Misunderstandings and Competition

As both artists achieved greater success, a rivalry began to develop. Fans, the media, and social media contributed to the tensions, often comparing their achievements and stirring up debates about who was the true Afrobeats king. This competition sometimes led to social media exchanges, with both artists sharing subtle jabs that fans interpreted as indirect insults.

One notable incident occurred on July 28, 2014, when Wizkid tweeted after a show in New York, “Proper shows, proper venues,” which many saw as a dig at Davido. Wizkid later clarified in a 2016 interview with Olisa Dibua that he was referring to technical difficulties with sound quality. However, Davido interpreted it differently and responded in a separate interview, insisting that the tweet was aimed at him.

Their rivalry reached a peak in 2017. During this time, both artists dominated Nigerian music with chart-topping hits—Davido’s “If” and Wizkid’s “Come Closer” were hugely popular. The two exchanged subliminal messages, with Davido claiming the title of “best” and Wizkid responding with equally pointed remarks. This competition spilled into interviews, award shows, and performances, where each tried to outshine the other. Despite the tension, the rivalry captivated audiences and added fuel to the fan debate over who was the true king of Afrobeats.

 Reconciliation and Unity

Despite the rivalry, Wizkid and Davido have shown a desire to reconcile. In recent years, the two have publicly acknowledged each other with respect and even hinted at future collaborations. Davido confirmed in a 2018 interview with Native Magazine that he had settled their differences, and in 2019, the two shared a stage in a moment of unity that delighted fans worldwide.

In October, 2019 – Davido acknowledges Wizkid’s congratulatory message after the birth of his son while also congratulating Wizkid for his O2 Arena concert. In March 2023 – Wizkid posted Davido’s fourth album ‘Timeless’ in a move that showed that they were both on good terms. While they may not be best friends, their mutual respect in the past years is a testament to their growth as individuals and artists

The 2024 Feud: A New Chapter

In 2024, the Wizkid-Davido rivalry saw a resurgence. On April 19, 2024, Wizkid engaged fans on X and also trolled Davido by posting the viral video where he was crying on his knees as an example of how fans should beg him (Wizkid) for new music. Davido replied by saying the streets have gotten Wizkid’s music while also calling him a sick man and daring him to drop a solo track.

Just when we thought that phase was over, boom! The latest clash began in September when Wizkid hinted at a major announcement on Nigeria’s Independence Day, October 1. Shortly after, Davido announced an upcoming release for the same day, sparking excitement and tension among fans. Wizkid then tweeted, “P*ssy boys dropping mids again! [heart and eagle emoji],” which many saw as a direct jab at Davido. In another post, Wizkid referred to Davido as “wack” and accused him of following him around like a “fan boy.” This latest exchange rekindled the longstanding feud, drawing mixed reactions from fans.
